Here are all kinds of super Links to great resources for Literature and History, Free Stuff, Hobbies, and Nerds.

Literature, History and Historical Reenactment:

  • The Luminarium: http://www.luminarium.org/  An excellent site for FREE Medieval, Renaissance and Seventeenth Century sources, with the primary focus being literature, much of it English.  Provides E-text for primary sources, as well as biographical information, critical studies, maps, artwork and other images.

  • The Middle English Dictionary  http://ets.umdl.umich.edu/m/med/   Satisfying all of your Middle English lexical questions!

  • Isn't Geoffrey the cutest?  For my fellow Chaucer addicts...  http://icg.harvard.edu/~chaucer/

  • ...and a site with Middle English readings of various parts of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as well as clips of other early languages such as Old English, Old French, Middle High German, etc.   http://humanities.byu.edu/chaucer/ ... you haven't experienced the Tales until you've heard them in Middle English!  The Chaucer Studio Recordings!

  • The Thomas Hardy Association [TTHA]  http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/   I admit it! I LOVE Thomas Hardy too!  Jude the Obscure is my personal favorite at the moment, but it changes daily.

  • HyperHistory  http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html  Great resource for research and fun stuff.

  • Civil War Reenactment Info http://www.sutler.net/  I find the Battle of Antietam to be the most amazing (and disturbing) battle next to Gettysburg.  The 140th anniversary of Antietam occurred this year.  Four days of reenactment, history lessons, civil war medicine (eek!), and music.

  • Gettsyburg National Military Park http://www.nps.gov/gett/index.htm  It is one of the most awe inspiring places in the world.  The empty, silent fields are full of ghosts.

Hobbies and other stuff that I love that may be of interest to you:

  • United Astronomy Clubs of NJ http://users.erols.com/njastro/  ... anyone else counting down the days to the Leonids?

  • http://www.nasa.gov/   See above.   :)  Great photos!

  • Book of the Month Club  http://www.bomc.com  okay....so I'm addicted to books... who isn't?  As they say, membership has its privileges.  Members get free access to the Oxford English Dictionary online, in case you don't.

  • Get OUTSIDE!  http://nyc.gov/html/dpr/home.html  The NYC Parks and the Greenbelt are some of the most beautiful places in the world!  Try High Rock Park in Staten Island... it has an amazing labyrinth of under-used hiking trails through some of the most beautiful woodlands, swamps, marshes and meadows in the East Coast.

  • While you're outside, these might help.  Here's a quick look at the Peterson's Guides.   Field Guides   I personally love their books on spiders and insects and Northeastern birds.  They come in handy at our cabin in the woods.  Don't you just love a wolf spider?  eek!

  • Even better are the FREE Nature Guides from http://www.enature.com/

  • I LOVE DIRT!  Knew I'd catch your eye.  Gardening anyone?  Try http://gardening.about.com/ for great resources and a good library for all gardening zones and climates.

  • http://gardenweb.com/vl/  provides a comprehensive Index to Gardening Websites.

  • http://www.burpee.com/ is probably the best-known source for seeds, and the seeds I've received from them were all good, except for the oregano I bought two years ago, which is difficult to grow from seed anyway, so it was probably my fault.

  • Johnny's Seeds of Albion, Maine is my absolute favorite seed company, and all of their varieties are hardy.  http://www.johnnyseeds.com/

  • Lincoln Center  http://www.lincolncenter.org  Music, music music!  Just once I'd like to be able to afford tickets to La Boheme at the Metropolitan Opera.

  • Anyone else love Hyacinth Bucket?  "It's boo-kay!"  I am addicted to the BBC show "Keeping Up Appearances."  Check out Channel 13 (New York's PBS station) at 8pm on Saturday if you're like me, and home on a Saturday night. (and NO, I don't have cable).  http://www.bbcamerica.com/genre/comedy_games/keeping_up_appearances.jsp

  • I am also addicted to "As Time Goes By," another BBC sitcom, starring Dame Judy Dench and Sir Geoffrey Palmer, who are irresistible!  Conveniently on PBS right after "Keeping Up Appearances," for those of us with no life.   http://atgbcentral.com/

  • As you may have noticed, I love "The Prisoner" television series!  Long live Number Six!  http://www.netreach.net/~sixofone/

  • Katharine Hepburn, actor extraordinaire, role model, goddess.  Watch all of her movies and learn.  http://www.imdb.com/Name?Hepburn,+Katharine

  • Cary Grant: the smoothest, man that every lived, darling.  He could charm the socks off of anyone, even with a name like Archibald Leach.  http://www.imdb.com/Name?Grant,+Cary

For those of us who would embrace our inner nerd:

  • The Realm of Geeking: http://www.angelfire.com/scifi/geekdom/  An excellent site for links to Fantasy and epic fiction and art, comparative mythology, Tolkein, as well as D&D RPG character sheets, documents, maps and links.  It's my husband's site, but I'm really not biased!     :)

  • RPG Shop - http://www.rpgshop.com/  Great source for D&D related books, games, dice, and other gaming supplies.  I just love the Fire Chessex Dice!

  • Think Geek - http://www.thinkgeek.com/  You have to love a site that embraces the nerd in all of us.  Buy a mug and advertise your nerdiness!

  • Nerd NYC - http://www.nerdnyc.com/  Ditto.  My personal favorite is the Otaku tee shirt. One of the co-owners is a great guy and a great nerd.

  • Anyone else addicted to the game Neverwinter Nights?  Help me!  http://nwn.bioware.com/
